Cue Musicologist Laughter

Schenkerians are to musicology as flowerpots are to the city of London.

Thanks to Jean-Jacques Nattiez for my musicology quote of the day. Courtesy of Music and Discourse: Toward a Semiology of Music, ch. 1.

Nattiez must be joking... but then I'm not quite sure what flowerpots are to London. Ornamental? Unnecessary? Vitally needed?

I don't think, mind you, that the other significant musicologist in my life is doing Schenkerian analysis just now. Or has in several years.

The main goal of Shenkerian analysis
is to put in evidence the importance of tonic and dominant in tonal music.
